Munlad's End - Mila's Story
El Fin de Munlad - La Historia de Mila
ENG

There was hardly anything left in Munlad. Since that day the lights appeared in the sky, nothing had ever been the same. The water dried up in the rivers, and the seas quickly receded, giving way to a shaky and dangerous terrain.
The ground began to fill with dry leaves as flowers and fruits withered on their branches and fell to the ground, already rotten.
Every being that inhabited the planet emigrated in search of somewhere the land might provide for them. A desperate search for somewhere to survive. However, no one was prepared to accept the truth: there was nowhere in Munlad immune to that evil.
The planet had died.
And soon they would too.
***
Among all those species that cohabited the planet, the Nan were among the smallest. They had learned to go unnoticed, thus surviving the passage of centuries.
But their need to go unseen was not for fear of being hunted or eaten (they were not even remotely a delicacy in Munladian cuisine)… thanks to their small size they easily slipped into baskets, bags and pockets. And in this way they got the sustenance that their tiny body asked for. In short, the Nan were known to be unsullied petty thieves.
Mila was an orphan of Nan. She had lost her own people a long time ago and was just in the pocket of a Grendal when those lights appeared in the sky.
The day the water from the well dried up, el Grendal, along with his family, migrated north in search of a more prosperous place. And Mila still inside that pocket went with them towards the Valley of Freden.
Everyone they met along the way had a worried look on their faces. The family exchanged some words and grunts with the other nomads. They found that farther east, near the Edge, the mountains had awakened in rage and a thick river of fire was licking through the forests of rapidly burning dry trees. The sky turned gray. The prognosis was not good.
When they reached Valley of Freden, all seemed lost.
***
Then one night they showed up.
They came down from the sky, slowly and silently, inside big shiny boxes. Its exterior shone like the edge of a knife, returning the brightness of the few torches that remained lit.
The Sky Travelers emerged from their capsules and approached those who were watching them in fear. They raised their arms in peace and explained the reason for their arrival at Munlad. The Sky Travelers spoke in calm voices, using their suit translators to make themselves understood.
“Inhabitants of Munlad-X-009, for a few years ambition and greed have caused the destruction of hundreds of planets, thus causing the death of thousands of inhabitants in the galaxy. And your planet, unfortunately, has been collateral damage,” said one of them “We come from Qham and we’ll try to mitigate, in some way, the evil that the thirst for power has caused. We’ve been sent with the intention of removing as many inhabitants as possible from the planet.” His gaze was directed at the people of the valley through the glass of the helmet he was wearing “However, we do not have enough time to evacuate the entire planet.”
A muffled cry broke the silence, and they soon realized, to their horror, that there wouldn't be room for all of them on those ships.
The Sky Travelers raised their arms, seeking silence. The same traveller spoke again using the translator that was connected to the neck of the suit:
“However, there is a chance to save the young ones.”
***
At the same moment that the ships began to descend, Mila had peeked out from the blanket inside the basket in which she was dozing. She listened very carefully to the traveler's words and knew that she was not going to be left behind. Perhaps she had no family to say goodbye to, perhaps she was the only Nan left on the face of Munlad, since she had not seen any of her clan while she had been in the Valley of Freden. But he wasn't going to stay there. So with the stealth that characterized her, she left the basket and headed towards the newcomers.

Parents hugged their children, grabbed their faces in an attempt to hold them longer. They smiled even though despair at their children's uncertain future was all they had inside.
The children, on the other hand, cried disconsolately, tremendously aware of the end that awaited those who remained on the ground.
The children were entering the ships, escorted by the Sky Travelers. The last to enter was the Grendal's son. His parents hugged him one last time and let him go.
The doors were closed and thus the fate of all of them was sealed.

Mila, settling behind a cooling tube in the ship, began the countdown in a low, excited voice.

***
